Magic, Motes, and Pandemonium

The Obelisk

Tucked amidst the cluttered forests and hamlets at the feet of the Gate is an obelisk inscribed with with several spells, which, if spoken correctly, allow a non-magical person to perform miracles in the vicinity.

Every riddle on the obelisk corresponds to a spell. It may take some research to uncover a working incantation and application.

Spells have been known to appear or disappear from the obelisk without warning. Nota bene: The Teahouse, Canteen have their own obelisks with different spells. You may also find obelisks in secret regions.

To access the puzzles that allow you to read the obelisk, message Neko's Gate with the letter E.

Motes

You will occasionally receive messages from "Neko's Gate" notifying you whenever you have gained a mote.

Motes are sparks of divine essence that have leaked from the Gate's energy cascade. Their effects and usefulness are uncertain, but magical ability appears to increase with the more motes you acquire. The more time spent in a land near the Gate, the more likely a mote will drift into your aura.

Staff Magic vs Obelisk Magic

Staff Magic  is available only to certain staff members for the purpose of enforcing the rules of each domain.

Obelisk Magic  is available to everyone. It should be cast in accordance with the spirit of the domain, but its use is not overseen or enforced (other than bystanders who may react to its use or misuse).

It's still magic even if you know how it's done.
