Purpose of Staff

Gatelands staff have two purposes:

  • Represent Alistair and the Gatelands

  • Pursue the Gatelands mission

Staff may also enforce Gatelands law, but it is better for them to train and equip the Gatelanders themselves to do so.

Representing the Gatelands and Alistair

Alistair is a Promethean, believing that power, respect, and creativity should be available to everyone. Therefore:

  • Staff should ensure that all roleplayers are treated with respect.

  • Staff should create a level playing field for groups within the Gatelands.

  • Alistair created Obelisk Magic so that non-staff may acquire power, and Guard Magic, a small offshoot of Staff Magic that permits citizens to enforce Gatelands law and to record misbehaviour. Staff should extend these efforts by foiling those who wish to deny power to others.

Staff should not have conflicts of interest. They should not work for similar outside groups.

In the realms above the Gatelands, Alistair is a faithful servant of the lords above him. Likewise:

  • He expects his own staff to be servant leaders who place the good of others above their own self-interest.

  • (Outside of roleplay,) staff should treat everyone with respect and decorum. Should a citizen or guest experience a momentary lapse of manners, they should be muted with an apology (and if needed, an explanation, e.g. "roleplay only"). Invaders/non-guests should be escorted from the lands with minimum distraction.

Pursuing the Gatelands Mission

The Gatelands mission is to:

  • Provide a home for its citizens

  • Create a sanctuary, a safe place where people are free to be imaginative and sincere

  • Provide a large audience for performances

  • Accommodate multiple simultaneous roleplays (each in their own separate reality, and with their own playwright to facilitate a smooth performance)

Staff should either perform these activities themselves, or teach others and delegate these activities to them:

  • Lead structured roleplays as a playwright.

  • Make people feel welcomed and help them join one of the structured roleplays, or encourage them to join the audience. This is ideally achieved by scheduling concierges around the clock to take on this duty.

  • Teach people how to roleplay at the highest quality level: an interactive story that exists in its own reality, overseen by a playwright  (see Levels of Roleplay)

  • Honour loyal citizens (e.g. prevent vertical spam from scrolling away detailed roleplay), because these citizens form the basis of the Gatelands' success.

  • Welcome newcomers to encourage them to become citizens, and to give citizens more reasons to become loyal proponents of the Gatelands.

  • Identify trustworthy citizens and teach them the ways of Obelisk Magic and Guard Magic, while adhering to the constraints of the Magic Inquisition (e.g. teach how to solve riddles without giving out answers).

  • Train people how to be quality audience. Audience should be mostly silent except when they are providing acknowledgement and encouragement to roleplay that they like, or when they are enforcing Gatelands law to protect roleplayers from non-roleplayers etc.

  • Eradicate bullying and criticism.

  • Deescalate non-roleplay conflict.

  • Teach Gatelands law: What it is, and why it is important.

  • Encourage citizens to form multiple independent groups to uphold the law. These groups should recruit and train guards.

Staff should lead through example. Please don't spam the arena with non-roleplay. The ultimate goal of staff is to have every post be part of a structured roleplay. Reminders, instructions, or out-of-character greetings should be placed at the end of the post, after the staff's own roleplay.

If (due to emergency) the only active staff are too busy to roleplay themselves, they should limit their posts to necessary rule enforcement and explanations of law aimed at specific violators.

Ranks / The Chain of Command

The chain of command consists of the first three ranks (viceroys, senior staff, and staff). "Gatelanders" refers to the first six ranks.

  1. Viceroy. Heads of senior staff. They are expected to consolidate reports of senior staff and minimise the amount of communication for Alistair.

  2. Senior staff. They are also expected to train and recruit staff and playwrights, and to provide occasional reports to Alistair about pursuit towards the mission, including the activities of the staff under them.

  3. Staff. Each staff should have at least one senior staff to guide them on the pursuit of the mission. Staff should focus on the mission, and train and support Gatelands Guards to enforce the rules.

  4. Playwrights. Each active playwright is the leader and arbiter of each ongoing performance. Roleplayers should seek to perform beneath their playwright of choice and to avoid unstructured roleplay.

  5. Citizens (Roleplayers). The Gatelanders are smiled-upon roleplayers whose primary residence is the Gatelands. If they wish, they may exercise Guard magic to silence non-roleplayers.

  6. Citizens (Audience). The audience are non-roleplayers whose primary residence is the Gatelands. They watch and compliment the theatrical performances in the Gatelands arena. They may also silence non-roleplayers.

  7. Guests. Guests are visiting roleplayers or audience whose primary residence is outside the Gatelands.

  8. Invaders. People who do not fit into any of the above groups, or those against the Gatelands. They should be promptly removed.

Alistair reads private messages, but does not have time to explain things to you personally. (He oversees many missions for his superiors.) If he wishes to give you guidance, he will do so through viceroys or senior staff.

The best way to file a complaint with Alistair is to use both of these methods:

  • the Grumble spell, which will be reviewed (sometimes by Frig, sometimes by Alistair).

  • convince a senior staff that your issue is important enough for Alistair's time. If so, they may include it in a report. If a senior staff won't listen to you directly, then a staff member might bend a senior staff's ear on your behalf.
