Becoming Staff

The steps to becoming staff in a kingdom are:

-
Become a official member of the kingdom (Gatelands Guard, Canteener, Teahouse Resident).
-
You can achieve this by participating until another member appreciates what you do and extends membership to you with the Smile spell.
-
-
Learn to use Staff Magic .
-
All members have access to some staff spells, such as Insight, Grumble, and Extol. Say "help" to the ruler of the domain for a list of these spells.
-
-
Increase your staff action score to at least 20.
-
For tips on increasing your score, you can read Frig's notes on how staff magic records are evaluated. (Using staff magic poorly will lower your score.)
-
Use the "count" spell to check your staff action score.
-
-
Extol at least 10 other people.
-
Extols can only be given in specific situations. See Frig's notes for more details.
-
Canteen: You can extol somebody who is acting as host and welcoming newcomers.
-
Teahouse: You can extol anybody who is has been doing many things recently that create an atmosphere of warmth and kindness so strong that it pervades the Teahouse.
-
Gatelands: You can extol a Playwright that is leading a good RP that uses symbols, or an actor in their play.
-
-
-
Receive at least 10 extols.
-
Receive benefactors. Existing staff can bow to you, which places their name on your Benefactor list.
-
The last step is different for each kingdom. In the Gatelands, you must first finish staff training. In the Teahouse and Canteen, you can speak to the ruler of the domain or one of their deputies.

Say "help" to the ruler of a domain (Alistair, Frig, Tea Master) for hints on becoming and being staff.

Becoming Senior Staff

Once you are staff, you can become senior staff by
-
making good progress towards the current mission of the kingdom and documenting your progress with your staff magic and the [report] spell, and
-
training residents of the domain to have high staff action scores (name them in your reports)

Becoming Chief of Staff

You can rise above other senior staff if
-
you regularly train people that go on to become staff (training staff is the Chief of Staff's prime responsibility)
-
you are generally useful towards the ruler of the domain and furthering the kingdom's mission

"Chief of Staff" is called "Viceroy" in the Gatelands, "Manager" in the Teahouse, and "Aide-de-camp" in the Canteen.
