Roleplay ✧ Gatelands

Gatelands mission

  • A sanctuary for roleplayers

  • Several active roleplays at all times of day

Starting and joining roleplays

  • Each structured roleplay is marked with one of these six symbols:

@  $  &  ,  (  :

  • To start a new roleplay, pick one of these symbols. You are now considered to be the "Playwright" of that roleplay. You have ultimate authority in who is in your roleplay and what actions are considered valid or not.

  • To join a roleplay, place the roleplay's symbol at the beginning of your introduction post, so people know which roleplay you are joining. Your introduction post could be your first action, or a description of your proposed character. If the Playwright acknowledges you (in PM or incorporated into their next post), you are in.

  • Continue to place the roleplay symbol at the very beginning of every post that is inside that roleplay. For example:

@ carry me you giant robot! *Adjusts my position for maximum comfort, some bats helping her stay in place as another one would feed her grapes*

@ Ku! You won't get rid of me so easily, switcheroo! *Once the words escapes her lips, she dissapears and appears where another bat was. The bat would be on Ultron's hands now*

: *he walks around hanging up posters saying "join mer crew arrrg" as the posters has a picture of him as a pirate*

@ Beacon! *Her hand shines purple as she shoots out a Crystal shard, and it would stab into the ground* Now I am safe Ku.

: *he sits behind his table in the local tavern awaiting enlisters as you hear good 'ol pirate music play* yoho fidly deee *he sings along happily*

  • If you are not in that roleplay, please don't interact with the characters without the Playwright's approval. If you like the roleplay, please encourage them applause or compliments. However, criticism of any sort (even constructive) is not allowed. If you want a different or a better roleplay, then start one yourself.

  • Each roleplay should still adhere to Gate law, such as avoid short posts that scroll too fast.

  • Your roleplay should be an actual story, not people having a conversation.

  • Your goal, as Playwright, should be to help your players enjoy themselves and to put on a wonderful performance for the audience.

Who is the Gatelands for?

  • People who roleplay in public

  • Those who like to watch roleplaying

Rules (explain and silence immediately when broken)

  1. Roleplay only. Roleplay is an interactive story, not a conversation.

    • Exceptions: a small amount of: RP-style entrances, the teaching of Gate customs, and complimenting exceptional roleplay.

  2. Never criticise someone's RP. Criticising kills the RP. People open up and create more interesting RPs when they are not afraid of criticism. Learn to focus on the RP you like and ignore what you don't.

  3. Public RP. The Gatelands are for public RP only. Don't push people into private RP or other rooms.

  4. Avoid vertical spam (many short posts). Vertical spam scrolls others' RP out of view and is considered very rude here. The best weapon against vertical spamming is to combine your smaller posts into larger posts.

  5. Separate realities ("consent rule"): Every roleplay exists in its own reality. One person should be in charge of that reality (called the Playwright). You can only be in that reality if the Playwright allows it. It is best to use symbols (see the section "Starting and joining roleplays") to make it easier to distinguish realities from each other.

  6. Don't expose multiple accounts or fake avatars (as long as they are used for roleplaying purposes and not for non-RP trickery). Exposing them spoils the fun and discourages roleplaying, and may drive away RPers that prefer anonymity.

Guidelines

  • The chat is for roleplaying.

    • You should focus on having fun and making a creative story with others. It's against rule #1 to worry about spelling, grammar, or typos. It's a total waste of time and people are smart enough to figure out what you mean.

    • Unrelated roleplays occur simultaneously. Please use longer (and thus fewer) texts so the other roleplays aren't scrolled too quickly.

    • Roleplaying tends to be slow. Detailed roleplaying (the nicest sort to watch) can have minutes between posts. Please don't spam it up with comments such as "the chat is dead". (This also makes the Gatelands look unappealing to newcomers)

  • The chat is also for those who wish to watch roleplaying.

    • If you are in the audience, please keep your comments sparse (prefer longer fewer posts) to have minimal scrolling impact on the RP

    • Those who are not dedicated to public RP (or watching it) should consider immigrating to the Animeme Canteen or the Teahouse.

  • If you don't like another's roleplaying, ignore it. We welcome RPers of all ages.

  • Each roleplay happens in its own reality.

  • Conflict within RPs is encouraged, but outside of RP, kindness and courtesy are required. This includes any kind of harassment. The Gate is a sanctuary.

  • Violent and sexual RPs are acceptable (as long as they are not terribly explicit), and language should not too strong or racist. Sexuality and violence should be tolerated to the same degree.

  • Don't correct grammar or spelling. Not only is it boring and rude (hello!) it distracts from acting out interesting stories.

  • Recruiting for groups or clans breaks several rules: it is promotion and also distracts from roleplay. It's forbidden even if in RP style.

  • If staff are not enforcing RP, Alistair will sometimes walk through and temporarily ban all non-RPers. Please help others understand the Gatelands so this does not happen.

Changes depending on Gate size:

  • Above 30 people: start to silence those that make non-RP comments too frequently, or those that make short posts that scroll too fast.

What is a roleplay?

A roleplay is a story that you act out with others. These kinds of roleplays aren't really proper roleplays:

  • Having a conversation with roleplay elements.

  • Roleplaying checking PMs.

  • Pretending that you are in a chatroom. (Seriously...)

Levels of posts

Best:

Acceptable:

  • Explanations of Gate customs and laws

  • Richly detailed solo roleplays or entrances

Acceptable if the Gate is otherwise quiet or small (less than 40 people):

  • Roleplay with less of a plot

  • Non-plot conversations that occur in character, serving as exposition or character development

  • Other kinds of exposition: descriptions of scenery, the world, or your character. They should presented in roleplay style and using appropriate delimiters.

Not acceptable:

  • Non-roleplaying

  • "Fake" roleplaying (a non-story conversation with actions, even if it is in RP-style, or a RP that is intended to troll others rather than being a sincere)

Why "Neko"?

Neko's Gate is so called due to the large population of nekos that live in the land surrounding the gate (but less commonly found at the Teahouse or the Canteen).

What is a neko?

A neko is a humanoid species with several cat-like features: a cat tail, an extra set of cat ears, and a cat-like personality.

I kept a chain upon my door
That would shake the shame of Cain
Into a blind submission

Suddenly it occurred to me
The reason for the run and hide
Had totalled my existence

I faced the door and all my shame
Tearin' off each piece of chain
Until they all were broken

And the more that I knocked
The hotter I got

Gotta knock a little harder
